Learning Group for Parents & Caregivers of Teens & Young Adults
An Eight Week virtual Psychoeducational (Learning) Group for Caregivers navigating the challenges of having a teen or young adult.
Building Connection, Respect, and Autonomy
This 8-week learning group is for caregivers who want to parent with more intention, compassion, and respect; both for their children and themselves. Together, we’ll explore what it means to move away from control or compliance based parenting and toward a more relationship-centered approach.
Using ideas from thoughtful parenting frameworks and childism theory, we’ll talk honestly about how power, culture, and adult expectations show up in everyday parenting moments. This group isn’t about getting it “right.” It’s about slowing down, noticing more, listening more deeply, and finding ways to support children’s voices while staying grounded in your own values.
Each week includes discussion, reflection, and practical tools you can try at home along with space to connect with other caregivers who are asking similar questions. This group is about learning, rather than processing.
This Learning Group is for:
The parent wanting connection and mutual respect
The parent who is curious about power, autonomy, and young people’s voices.
The parent who values honest conversation over rigid rules.
The parent who wants to learn, reflect, and apply what they learn.
Group Overview
-
Week 1: Building a Foundation
We start by building community and naming the systems that shape how teens and young adults are treated. Young adults explore how childism shows up in everyday life.
We focus on respect, autonomy, and honoring young people as full people with voices that matter.
-
Week 2: Listening & Observing
This week is about slowing down and really listening. Participants practice noticing young people’s needs without judgment or control.
We explore how adult-centered beliefs can silence young people and how awareness can shift power back toward connection.
-
Week 3: Respect & Boundaries
Boundaries are reframed as shared agreements, not punishment. Parents and caregivers learn how to guide teens and young adults while respecting their independence.
We examine how authority and control are often normalized and how they can limit freedom and self trust.
-
Week 4: Emotional Attunement and Validation
This week focuses on emotional awareness and co-regulation. Participants learn how to sit with big feelings instead of trying to fix or dismiss them.
We explore how social conditioning shapes emotional responses and how validation supports healing and trust.
-
Week 5: Empowering Decision Making
Parents and caregivers practice supporting teens and young adults’s choices as a form of liberation. Even small decisions can build agency and confidence.
We talk about navigating safety without reinforcing control or fear-based parenting.
-
Week 6: Navigating Systems and Advocacy
This week looks at how schools, healthcare, and other systems often center adults over young people. Participants explore childism as a structural issue.
We focus on advocacy that protects teens and young adults’ dignity while challenging harmful systems.
-
Week 7: Caregiver Wellbeing and Reflection
Our work includes caring for ourselves. This week centers reflection, burnout, and the pressures placed on caregivers/parents.
Participants explore how healing their own experiences supports more just relationships with their teens and young adults.
-
Week 8: Integration and Community Building
The final week brings everything together. Participants reflect on what they want to carry forward.
We focus on building community, staying accountable, and continuing to practice with young people and each other.
